Niagara-on-the-Lake, nestled at the mouth of the Niagara River where it meets Lake Ontario, boasts one of Canada's richest historical footprint. Originally inhabited by Indigenous peoples including the Neutral and Mississauga nations, the area was settled by British Loyalists in 1781 and named Butlersburg, later West Niagara. In 1792, it became Newark, the first capital of Upper Canada.
Following the War of 1812, the town was rebuilt and renamed Niagara-on-the-Lake to distinguish it from nearby Niagara Falls. The town is home to Ontario's oldest Anglican church, St. Mark's, and North America's oldest surviving golf course.
In 1970, the town merged with surrounding villages to form the modern day municipality. Today, it's celebrated for its preserved colonial architecture, the Fort George National Historic Site and the Shaw Festival Theatre, drawing in visitors from around the world. From battlefield to cultural haven, Niagara-on-the-Lake is a living museum of Canadian heritage.
Wellington House has a perfect location at the historic core of Niagara-on-the-Lake. Our front balcony overlooks the Shaw Festival Theatre which is literally 1 minute away on foot. With numerous restaurants and shops within walking distance, guests can easily explore local offerings. Notable attractions, such as Niagara-on-the-Lake Museum, Fort George and Butler's Barracks National Historic Sites, are also only short strolls away.
We currently offer two king sized rooms and one double king-sized room, each equipped with gas fireplace, 50-inch TV, mini-fridge, tea & coffee making facilities and free high speed Wi-Fi. At the moment all our guest rooms are on the second floor which involve one flight to stairs to access. Continental breakfast is served daily in our elegant dining room.
Wellington House was built in the 1990s and has been a fixture in the community for decades, offering hospitality in a setting that reflects the elegance and tranquility of Niagara-on-the-Lake. The home features spacious rooms and spaces with period-style furnishings, gas fireplaces and modern amenities, all designed to evoke a sense of warmth and refinement. The previous owners retired in 2019.
Wellington House Bed and Breakfast has reopened in 2026 under new management by John and Trevor. It is once again a perfect place to stay for visitors seeking a blend of history, culture and comfort in one of Canada's most picturesque towns.
